About Us
Writers Circle began as a small club in Sir Winston Churchill High School in 2006. Founded to address the need for a group interested in creative writing, not merely the essays and analysis papers assigned in class, the first meeting drew in about six people - a rather humble beginning. For the first few weekly meetings, the Writers Circle floundered. What in the world could such a club actually do?
After wasting many a lunch hour holding discussions on what people wanted to gain from the club (often going off on wild tangents), the club began to host writing activities. Although seemingly amateur, activities like completing stories as a group within a set period of time helped to develop writing skills and brought the now-larger group closer together. In addition, people continued to bring in their own writing pieces for editing and comments.
Finally, the group decided on a year-end project, to commemorate the efforts put forth all year to improve their writing skills. Although there were many doubts at first, many "Really? We have to get them done by then? No way!" comments, eight members of the group summoned the effort and creativity needed to make their own stories and poems, publishing them in an anthology. Many doubts were silenced by a guest presentation by published author Shenaaz Nanji, who insisted that as long as the work continued to be edited until the very end, it would turn out well.
Now, with a book published online, the club itself is beginning to expand its horizons. Although the high school Circle will continue, our hope is to extend the community over the Internet in order to allow more people to share in our experiences. We intend to promote the creation of more Writers Circle groups within other schools and communities, and hope that they will make use of this website as an integral resource and online publisher for their works.
The website is still in its development stage, but we hope to expand the community while improving our page. We hope that you will find that your own interest in writing and reading is mirrored by ours, and help us to create a network of Circles to support and inspire fellow writers across the globe.
